White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said Thursday that the rate of new vaccinations in states with the highest new Covid-19 case rates has outpaced the national average over the past week, as some cities reinstate mask recommendations.
Zients said in the past week, five states with the highest case rates, Florida, Nevada, Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri, have had a higher rate of new people getting vaccinated than the national average.
He said this is the second week in a row they are seeing this trend of new vaccinations outpacing the national average in states hit hard by the Delta variant of the coronavirus.
More than 5.2 million Americans have gotten a vaccination shot in the past 10 days.
The White House also announced Thursday it will be sending $100 million to nearly 2,000 rural health clinics to fund vaccination outreach and education in communities with low vaccination rates.
The Delta variant now accounts for 83% of cases nationwide, leading Los Angeles to recently reinstate a mask mandate and Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, to recommend wearing masks indoors. Amid the spread of the variant, the White House is continuing its push to get people vaccinated. At its press conference Thursday it noted that unvaccinated people accounted for 97% of Covid-19 hospitalizations and deaths across the U.S.
162 million. That’s how many Americans have been fully vaccinated as of Thursday, which amounts to 49% of the U.S. population. The White House said 80% of Americans 65 and older are now fully vaccinated.
On Wednesday, one Alabama doctor went viral after she shared a post recounting her experiences dealing with a resurgence of Covid-19 patients in the hospital. She said patients who are hospitalized for Covid-19 and have to be intubated “beg her” to give them a vaccine shot, but she tells them it is too late by then. After the person passes away, she often tells their families that the best way to honor their loved one that passed is by getting vaccinated. Only 33 percent of Alabama’s population is fully vaccinated so far.
