Police told reporters that the culprit had been apprehended and that they believe he was acting alone.
A spokesperson told CNN that police were initially alerted to the suspect at 6:15 p.m. local time, and that “it’s too early to tell” if the situation is terrorism-related.
Few other details were immediately available on the incident in Kongsberg, located about an hour’s drive from the capital Oslo, but authorities said the attacks took place over “a large area” of the municipality and that there were multiple crime scenes.
Police chief Oeyvind Aas declined to comment on the number of casualties, according to Reuters.
The country’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security tweeted that minister Monica Mæland was following the situation closely.
