Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya left Tokyo for the Austrian capital of Vienna on Wednesday instead of taking her scheduled flight to Warsaw, in a move that is likely to spark more drama in the diplomatic saga between the Belarusian regime and the International Olympic Committee.
Tsimanouskaya was scheduled to fly to Poland as the country’s government stepping in to offer her a humanitarian visa after she had refused to board a flight to Belarus on Sunday and sought diplomatic protection.
The change in flights and destination was prompted by security concerns, a Belarusian community member told Reuters without elaborating.
Tsimanouskaya was escorted to the Narita airport near Tokyo by a police convoy and she did not speak to reporters at the scene.
This is developing story.
