The Billboard charts this week largely belong to Billie Eilish, whose new album Happier Than Ever and the songs featured on it have taken over in quite the showy fashion. The teen singer-songwriter performs best on the various rock and alternative rankings, where she has become one of the most successful acts ever in an incredibly short span of time.
This week, Eilish scores another No. 1 hit on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart with an album cut, and by returning to the summit on the genre-specific tally, she has tied one of the biggest stars of all time in at least one regard. The seven-time Grammy winner’s “Happier Than Ever,” the title track from her sophomore set, blasts onto the tally as high as a cut can climb, instantly becoming a chart-topper. That’s an impressive showing for any tune, especially one that isn’t currently being promoted as a single.
As “Happier Than Ever” starts at No. 1, Eilish lands her second leader on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. A pair of rulers might not sound like much, but it’s actually one of the largest accumulations of toppers among all acts, and certainly when looking solely at female musicians.
Before this week, the only female musician who had reached the top spot more than once was Taylor Swift, who collected both of her No. 1s in the past year (about). She first reached the summit last summer with “Cardigan,” the lead single taken from her surprise album Folklore. The project was a sonic shift for the powerhouse artist, and it brought her to the rock lists for the first time in her career.
Just months after she unleashed Folklore and its many hits on the world (and Billboard’s rock and alternative rankings), she returned with its sister album Evermore. That title was also a massive success, and just as was the case with its predecessor, that title’s lead single also wasted no time rising to No. 1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. “Willow” became Swift’s historic second ruler on the tally, and at the time, she stood on her own as the only woman to manage the feat of climbing to the summit more than once.
Eilish has now hit No. 1 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart with both “Happier Than Ever” and fellow Happier Than Ever tune “My Future.” She has thus far accrued nine top 10 smashes, while Swift has collected twice as many.
With two No. 1 hits apiece on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, Eilish and Swift are now on the same level as rock favorites like The Black Keys, Fun., Green Day and Panic! at the Disco. The two stars are also tied as the solo musicians, male or female, with the most champions on the ranking.
