Britney Spears is under investigation for misdemeanor battery by the sheriff’s department in Ventura County, Calif., multiple news outlets reported Thursday, after one of Spears’ housekeepers filed a complaint accusing the pop star of striking her during an argument.
The housekeeper claimed that Spears confronted her when she returned to Spears’ house and allegedly slapped a phone out of her hands, after which she went to a sheriff’s station and filed a report, NBC News reports.
Ventura County Sheriff Capt. Eric Bushow told the L.A. Times the incident happened on Monday, which was when the report was filed, and the housekeeper showed no signs of injury.
The Ventura County district attorney will make the decision on whether to move forward with the investigation.
Representatives of Spears have not yet responded to requests from Forbes for comment.
The accusation comes amid Spears’ legal battle with her father, Jamie Spears, who has exerted control for the past 13 years over the singer’s personal life and business dealings as her court-appointed conservator. Last week Spears’ father agreed to step down, though he did not state a date for when this would happen. The next date for the conservatorship hearing is on Sept. 29.
