India Donates 15,000 Bicycles To Madagascar On Its 76th Independence Day

Independence Day: India on Monday donated 15,000 bicycles to the country of Madagascar on the special occasion of its 76th Independence Day. Madagascar Prime Minister Christian Ntase and India’s Ambassador to Madagascar Abhay Kumar shared a message of friendship and solidarity by cycling. India’s relations with Madagascar date back to the 18th century. In fact, from the 12th century to the 19th century, there was regular trade between the two countries. Interstate relations started in 1954. Independent India had its consulates in French-controlled Madagascar. Which was converted into an embassy in 1960 when Madagascar became independent. About 20 thousand people of Indian origin live in Madagascar. In which 2500 Indian citizens are also included.

Current relations between the two countries

In November 2008, Exim Bank extended a loan of US$25 million to Madagascar for agricultural reform. As of 2011, 61 Malagasy people had received training by participating in the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Program (ITEC). In March 2018, India extended a loan of US$ 80.7 million to Madagascar for agriculture and mechanization to facilitate its financial assistance programme. Whereas the Indian Navy operates a Coastal Surveillance Radar (CSR-Coastal Surveillance Radar) station there.

Ambassador Abhay Kumar announced on World Cycle Day

On 03 June 2022, the Indian Embassy organized a cycle ride on the occasion of World Bicycle Day. In which more than 60 people from various cycling clubs along with representatives of the Government of Madagascar explained the importance of cycling to lead a healthy and eco-friendly lifestyle. Ambassador Abhay Kumar had advised everyone to cycle to save the environment and keep themselves fit. Meanwhile, it was announced that soon the Government of India will donate 15 thousand cycles to the Government of Madagascar. With this, the people of the country will use bicycles more.
