“It’s cyber sexual harassment”- Swara Bhasker on continuous trolling for her masturbation scene

One would think art and audiences have evolved in the 21st century to be open to realistic content being shown on the big screen. But with censorship laws getting stricter and online bullying becoming a part of the business, it’s getting tougher for actors to continue working, especially with unconventional and realistic content that surrounds politics, sexuality, caste and more.

One such incident happened with Swara Bhasker who did a scene in Veere Di Wedding where she can be seen masturbating. A barrage of negative comments came for her in the scene and the trolling has continued all these years. Talking about this, she took to social media and said, “Social media is a [virtual] public space like roads & restaurants are, but the public decency and basic social etiquette maintained offline are absent online. I can’t even post a photo of a flower without people linking it to masturbation or referencing ‘ungli’ (finger) after Veere Di Wedding came out.”

She further added that social media gives power to faceless accounts to speak anything and bend the rules of social conduct, “It’s ugly and amounts to cyber sexual harassment but I feel very strongly about not succumbing to online bullying or limiting my presence online because of it. We cannot cede the virtual public space to hate, bigotry and bullying.”
