Every month, Gaon, an organization based in South Korea that compiles the weekly charts, also doles out certifications when songs and albums hit special sales thresholds. Typically, a very small number of titles collect prizes, but August has turned out to be a big period for successful releases collecting honors. This time around, nine albums and EPs have been certified platinum or above in South Korea. That’s three times as many as were awarded last month.
The list of artists who earn another certification this month includes superstars like Exo, Seventeen, IU, Twice, Monsta X and others, though which honor they collect differs from group to group and title to title.
In a relatively rare showing, two releases have been certified for selling one million copies this month. It’s not often that any album receives that rare award, let alone more than one. In fact, including the two efforts that score that prestigious title this frame, just 16 studio efforts have hit that mark in the years since Gaon began bestowing certifications.
This month, both Seventeen’s Your Choice and Exo’s Don’t Fight The Feeling have been certified for selling one million copies. This honor marks the second such win for Exo, as their other project Don’t Mess Up My Tempo collected this award back in 2019. Seventeen has now seen four releases hit the million-sales threshold, with previous studio efforts Heng:garae, Semicolon and An Ode reaching that point.
A handful of albums are now multi-platinum wins for the groups behind them, though looking through the titles that collect new certifications from Gaon this month, they hit varying milestones. NCT Dream’s Hello Future and Tomorrow X Together’s The Chaos Chapter: Freeze are now triple platinum titles, which means they have officially sold at least 750,000 copies. Not too far behind those collections is Twice’s Taste of Love, which has been named a double platinum effort as it has now sold half a million copies.
Four additional albums and EPs have been certified platinum for selling at least a quarter million copies. Included in the quartet of new winners are Monsta X’s One Of A Kind, Treasure’s The First Step: Chapter Two, IU’s Love Poem and Stray Kids’ Clé 1: Miroh.
With this latest round of wins, Monsta X collects their fourth platinum certification, Treasure scores their third, IU lands her second and Stray Kids nab their fourth, with one of their sets, In Life, having already advanced to double platinum status.
