It was recently announced that National Award-winning filmmaker Srijit Mukherji would be taking over the reins of Shabaash Mithu from director Rahul Dholakia. Shabaash Mithu stars actor Taapsee Pannu in the lead role and is about the life of ace cricketer Mithali Raj. “I feel very excited about it! Stories in this genre were missing from my filmography. I’m also more excited because cricket is my first love, and I finally get to do something related to the game,” Mukherji said in an interview to ETimes.
The director also spoke about Taapsee Pannu essaying the role of Mithali Raj and the condition of women’s cricket today. “The 2017 World Cup went a long way in giving a boost to women’s cricket in India. We have seen various promising youngsters break into the Indian side. The very recently-concluded Test match was a big testimony of the growing power and the great character of the Indian women’s cricket team. The way they managed to force a draw despite having lost so many wickets, go a long way in promoting and advertising women’s cricket in India,” he said.
“Taapsee is one of the finest actors we have in India today. She’s a very hungry actress and puts in her 100 per cent in whatever role she takes up. This is going to be something new for her too; she hasn’t done anything like this before. She’s going to do an absolutely brilliant job,” he added.
