Thailand Condom Plan: Thailand plans to distribute over 95 million condoms ahead of Valentine’s Day to promote safe sex and avoid teen pregnancy. The South Asian government aims to curb sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, AIDS and cervical cancer.
On behalf of Bloomberg, spokeswoman Rachada Dhandirek told that Universal Health Care card holders can get 10 condoms a week for one year from February 1. These condoms are available in four sizes across the country. Condoms can be bought from pharmacies and primary care units in hospitals. “The drive to provide free condoms to gold-card holders will help prevent diseases and promote public health,” Rachada said.
Steps taken due to sexually transmitted diseases
This step has been taken in view of the increased sexually related diseases (STD) cases in the last few years. Syphilis and gonorrhea were to account for more than half of STD cases in 2021, according to new official figures, which said the most affected by STDs were people aged 15 to 19 and 20 to 24. During 2021 in Thailand, 24.4 out of 1000 Thai girls aged 15-19 gave birth to children. Meanwhile, according to WHO, the global rate for girls in the same age group was 42.5.
