White House Partners With Popular Dating Apps To Promote Covid-19 Shots

The White House is partnering with nine popular dating apps to encourage Americans to get vaccinated—by offering special perks to users who have received their Covid-19 shot—in an attempt to overcome a slowdown in the rollout due to vaccine hesitancy among some people.

According to Axios, Bumble and Badoo will allow U.S. users to add a “vaccinated” badge to their profiles and offer them credits towards premium features like “Superswipes.”

It’s unclear how the apps will verify a person’s vaccination status as the Match’s official statement no mention of it, however, a CNN report suggests users will have to submit proof of vaccination.

According to data published by the CDC, around 60% of all adults in the U.S. have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, with the country having administered a total of nearly 280 million jabs. After taking office in January, President Joe Biden set a goal of administering 100 million shots in his 100 days at the White House. After the U.S. managed to more than double that goal, Biden set a fresh target aiming to ensure that at least 70% of all U.S. adults get at least one dose of the vaccine by the July 4th holiday. However, the country’s vaccine rollout has slumped from a peak seven-day average of 3.3 million daily shots in early April to around 1.6 million daily shots right now. Along with the partnership with dating apps the administration is also working with NASCAR, country music organizations, social media and rural organizations to reach out to those who are hesitant about receiving the shot.

According to the Telegraph, U.K. government officials are planning to approach popular dating brands such as Tinder as part of an effort to minimize vaccine hesitancy among young Britons. One of the ideas reportedly being considered is a “blue tick” or banner on profiles of people who have been vaccinated. The government is also considering funding advertisements on the apps to describe the benefits of vaccines. The report notes that there is some concern about the “blue tick” approach as dating apps would not be obliged to seek vaccination proof. There is a worry that people displaying these checkmarks without having to prove that they are vaccinated could have legal and moral implications. The stronger effort at the moment seems to be focused on rolling out an advertising campaign.
